James Bartholomew Cummings AM (1927–2015), universally known as the “Cups King,” is the most successful trainer in the history of the Melbourne Cup. His legacy at Flemington is commemorated by his bronze statue and the permanent “Saintly Place” exhibition.

  • Experienced his first Melbourne Cup win as a strapper for his father's horse, Comic Court.

  • Officially granted his own horse trainer's license at the age of 26.

  • Married Valmae Beesley; they remained married for 61 years until his death.

  • Achieved his first Group 1 victory with Stormy Passage in the SAJC Derby.

  • Won his 8th Melbourne Cup with Kingston Rule in a record time of 3:16.3, which still stands today.
