Michael “Mike” Moroney (1958–2025) was a preeminent figure in Australasian racing, celebrated for his mastery in training stayers and his successful “dual-hemisphere” operation. With over 50 Group 1 victories across New Zealand and Australia, he remains one of the few trainers to have conquered the highest levels of the sport on both sides of the Tasman.

  • Recipient of Victoria's highest training honor for excellence in just his third full season based in the state.

    2003: Fred Hoysted Award

  • Conditioned the champion Xcellent to win the New Zealand Derby and New Zealand Stakes, leading to the horse being named NZ Horse of the Year twice.

  • Won five Derbies across both countries, including the Victoria Derby twice (1997, 2009) and the New Zealand Derby three times (1996, 2003, 2004).

  • Recorded 55 Group 1 wins, consisting of 32 in New Zealand and 23 in Australia.

  • Won the VRC Oaks at Flemington with Brazilian Pulse.

  • Enjoyed a career resurgence with the star mare Tofane, winning the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap and the Tattersall’s Tiara.
