Pat Hyland (1941–2026) was an icon of Australian thoroughbred racing, uniquely distinguished as one of only eight jockeys to complete the “Grand Slam” of Australian racing and later transitioning into a Group 1-winning trainer. His career spanned over 60 years at the highest level of the sport.

  • Born in Port Fairy, Victoria.

    1941: Born

  • Began his apprenticeship as a jockey at age 15 with trainer Jim Moloney in Warrnambool. He would maintain a lifelong professional partnership and friendship with Moloney.

  • Had his first metropolitan ride in the Standish Handicap at Flemington.

    1958: First Ride

  • Rode his first winner at a race meeting in Ballarat.

  • Captured his first major victory in the Victoria Derby guiding Craftsman.

  • Achieved a rare "clean sweep" of the feature races at the Flemington Autumn Carnival, winning the Newmarket Handicap (Rashlore), Australian Cup (Grand Print), C.M. Lloyd Stakes (Samson), and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Grand Print).

  • Won the W.S. Cox Plate aboard Star Affair, the first leg of his eventual Grand Slam.

    1965: Cox Plate Triumph

  • Formed a legendary partnership with the champion sprinter Vain, winning the Golden Slipper (1969) and the Caulfield Guineas.

  • Won the VRC Oaks as a jockey aboard Rom’s Stiletto.

  • Won the Caulfield Cup riding Affinity.

  • One of only eight jockeys to win the Golden Slipper, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate, and Melbourne Cup.

  • Secured the Melbourne Cup on What A Nuisance, becoming the first winner of a million-dollar purse in Australian racing and completing his personal "Grand Slam" of the four major races.

  • Retired from professional riding with a record of 2,382 winners and 30 Group 1 victories.

  • Transitioned into a second career as a racehorse trainer, establishing his stable at Flemington.

  • One of a handful of individuals to achieve Group 1 success as both a jockey and a trainer.

  • Achieved his first Group 1 win as a trainer with Saleous in the VRC Oaks, becoming one of only three people to win that race as both a jockey and a trainer.

  • Trained the star mare Zarita to Group 1 victories in the South Australian Derby and the Australasian Oaks.

  • Inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame for his excellence as both a jockey and trainer.

  • Officially retired from training due to health reasons, handing the reins of the family training partnership over to his son, Chris Hyland.

  • Passed away at the age of 84 in Melbourne, survived by his wife Maree and their six children.
